1986: A three-time reader of Lord of the Rings leading to me long-term planning the idea of an overland quest. Fast forward to 1993, and my brother, two friends and I buying a rusty Land Rover and a paper map of Africa, and deciding to drive and wild-camp the length of the continent: four hobbits in a 4×4. Crossing the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, being held up by gunmen, and, with the confidence that comes with youth, somehow managing to talk our way out of it. Reaching Cape Town several months later, and returning safely home by plane (rather than eagle).
